Reflections on applying a gender-sensitive approach in land restitution policies
General Description:
In this strand, we will reflect on how a gender-sensitive approach can inform the land restitution process. In this space we will look at the strategies, used both at an institutional level as well as at the social and community level, implemented to guarantee the rights of women over land, and the impacts, challenges and options which have emerged in the course of this process.
To this end, we will consider if the disproportionate and differentiated impact in terms of how women exercise rights over land in Colombia only has to do with the armed conflict, and what other aspects might influence this. Equally, we will take a closer look at how the situation of rural-based women and their link to the land is described in the framework of the armed conflict, and how this has been read in the process of land restitution.

Questions:
- What elements of the general context (in addition to the armed conflict) have a negative and disproportionate impact on women’s access to land, and should be taken into account in a land restitution process in order to find a formula for transformative reparation?
- What alternatives to applying a differential approach have social organisations used in order to resolve the problems which rural-based women encounter in terms of guarantees to their rights over land?
