Presentation
The National University of Colombia in Amazonia, in partnership with the Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Humanities in Bogotá, the University of the State of Amazonas in Tabatinga and Caro and Cuervo Institute, are pleased to host the International Colloquium AMAZONICAS VI, May 24-28, 2016, in the cities of Leticia (Colombia) and Tabatinga (Brazil).
The International Colloquium AMAZONICAS "The Structure of Amazonian Languages" has been held biannually since 2007, and given its itinerant character, has been organized in various Amazonian countries. Its mission is to promote and strengthen exchange and cooperation among researchers engaged in the study of indigenous languages spoken in the Amazon region. Thus, AMAZONICAS has become an intellectual seedbed and moving force for academic integration within one of the world's foremost regions of cultural and linguistic diversity.
Each edition of AMAZONICAS has two main symposiums, dedicated to themes in phonology and syntax, in addition to one symposium focused on studies of a specific linguistic family. The 2016 themes are 'Negation in Amazonian Languages', 'Historical Phonology and Sound Change in Amazonian Languages' and the Tukano and Makú (Nadahup/Kakua-Nukak/Puinave) language families.
The event brings together renowned researchers as keynote speakers, and limits the number of presentations per symposium so that participants can attend all presentations given over the five days of the meeting. The organizers of each symposium are responsible for selection of presenters, following general calls and submission of abstracts. The colloquium as a meeting and shared learning experience is open to students, teachers and researchers in related fields.
In conjunction with this meeting, we will offer two intensive courses during the week after to the general event (see link).
